Dr. Stephen Gowing

Dr. Gowing is a thoracic surgeon with extensive clinical and academic experience in thoracic and foregut surgery. Prior to joining Queen’s, he served as an Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Manitoba and Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. Prior to his recruitment to the University of Manitoba, he was an Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Saskatchewan and St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

Dr. Gowing completed his MD, CM at McGill University in 2010, followed by General Surgery residency at the McGill University Health Centre from 2010 to 2017. While at McGill he completed a PhD in science focusing on the immuno-oncologic mechanisms leading to lung cancer metastasis under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Lorenzo Ferri. At McGill Dr. Gowing received training in third space endoscopic tumor resection and myotomy from Dr. Ferri and was exposed to the principles of enhanced recovery for lung and foregut oncology patients following surgery.

He subsequently completed his Thoracic Surgery residency at The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa, from 2017 to 2019 where he obtained training in airway and foregut endoscopic ultrasonography, uniportal VATS lobectomy and segmentectomy and further training in minimally invasive foregut surgery.

Dr. Gowing is passionate about multidisciplinary care and research. He is equally passionate about the national expansion of third-space endoscopic foregut surgery. Through structured education and peer mentorship, he seeks to equip the next generation of therapeutic endoscopists with these techniques. Most recently, he co-directed the first Canadian Surgery Forum (CSF) masterclass for endoscopic submucosal resection and myotomy in 2024 in collaboration with his colleague, Dr. Biniam Kidane.
