Electives:
The Department of Surgery at Queen's University provides elective experiences for students in the clerkship phase from other accredited medical schools (LCME/CACMS) in Canada and the United States. Students must be in their final year of clerkship.
Elective students in the Department of Surgery are put on-call on their designated service. Call Schedules are emailed to elective students one week prior to their start date. This schedule enables the elective student to page his or her senior resident, who will direct them as to the location and start time on their first day.
To apply for an elective in Surgery, interested visiting applicants must use the AFMC Portal.
Queen's students interested in electives in Surgery must contact the MD Elective Coordinator (medelect@queensu.ca).
Observerships:
If you are an undergraduate pre-clerkship student from Queen’s, please email Taylor Rosenblath with the dates of your request and your team preference. You may not reach out directly to the faculty for an observership until capacity has been confirmed and you have been directed to do so. Once confirmed, you may coordinate with the faculty and/or their admin to determine when you can observe. You must enter the Observership information into Elentra to ensure all required criteria is met and insurance is in place.
If you are a domestic or international undergraduate pre-clerkship student requesting an observership, please email Taylor Rosenblath with your name, year of study, and team preference. Once capacity has been confirmed, you will be provided with further instruction on how to proceed.
Please note: Observerships are not permitted for home, domestic, or international undergraduate clerkship students in years 3 and 4 of their degree. If you are an undergraduate clerkship student and would like to complete an elective with the Department of Surgery, please visit the AFMC Student Portal to apply.
