New Surgical Research Chairs Appointed

Queen’s Health Sciences is pleased to announce the appointments of three new Research Chairs in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Ryan Bicknell has been appointed as the Helliwell Chair in Orthopaedic Research, Dr. Ron Levy as Queen’s Chair in Surgical Innovation and Research, and Dr. Sulaiman Nanji as the J. Hugh McGuire Chair in Surgery. All three Chairs were appointed by Dean Jane Philpott on the recommendation of Surgery Department Head Dr. Ross Walker. Their five-year terms began on January 1, 2022.

KHSC offering novel cardiac procedure closer to home

Patients in southeastern Ontario will no longer need to travel to Toronto or Ottawa for a specialized cardiac procedure, as Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) has received approval to offer minimally invasive mitral valve clip repair.

The Kingston Kidney Transplant Team (KKTP) is a Health Canada-accredited adult kidney transplant program. Associate professor of Medicine and transplant Nephrology at Queen's and Medical Director for the KKTP Dr. M. Khaled Shamseddin says, “The KKTP is one out of six Ontarian transplant programs enabling adult patients with advanced kidney disease to easily access both deceased and live donor kidney transplantation.” The KKTP team was awarded the 2018 SEAMO Leadership Award as a result of outstanding patient care and outcomes.

Dr. Michael Yacob joined the Department of Surgery at Queen’s University in the summer of 2019, just months prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and we had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss some of the valuable work that he has been involved in during his time so far. “I am an attending vascular surgeon at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and an assistant professor through Queen’s University.

Spotlight on the Department of Surgery

Ten years ago, the Department of Surgery had 34 members, and today it boasts an incredible 56 surgeons in seven divisions with active recruitment still happening. Those divisions include general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, and otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. Dr. Ross Walker has been Department Head for a little over a year and he says there have been several new developments in the field.
