While the pandemic has had a significant impact on our ability to train surgeons, it has also given us the opportunity to look at new ways to deliver education and enhance our simulation programs.

We returned to in-person teaching rounds in June 2022, and also run in-person anatomy labs and simulation sessions. There remains, however, good opportunities to engage in hybrid learning by maximizing our simulation programs in conjunction with clinical training. This is particularly important for our trainees who have had limited clinical exposure.

Royal College exams and CaRMS continue to be held virtually, and no electives are currently being offered. While this offers certain benefits in terms of expense, it also means that students don’t have the opportunity to experience Kingston as a potential career location in the future. 2021 also saw the first cohort of graduates with a full five years of training within the Queen’s CBME program.

We continue to catch up on research programs, and Dr. Parham Daneshvar has been appointed as the Resident Research Coordinator to support our Residents.

Our William Ersil Resident Research Day was held in November 2021 with Guest Scholar Dr. Rebecca Auer from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. We held a Research in Progress Day in the Spring of 2022 for Residents to share ideas and work in progress. These events are important for sharing ideas and networking, and we continue to look forward to ways in which we can come together to train the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
