Dr. Sunil Patel's paper titled "Delayed vs Early Appendectomy for Appendicitis" won best scientific paper at the Canadian Surgical Forum.
Dr. Patel would like to congratulate the residents (past and present) who were instrumental in the conduct of this trial. He would also like to acknowledge his colleagues for their dedication to this important work.
Zee Mir presented the paper and acknowledged that this was a resident driven research trial. The panels and judges (including the chair of the CAGS research committee) were very impressed with this particular aspect. In fact, the success of this trial has resulted in great enthusiasm at exploring further trials designed and conducted by trainees across the country.
The "DELAY" Trial was a randomized controlled trial comparing delayed vs. early appendectomy for those with appendicitis. This is the first trial to assess the safety of deferring surgery until the following morning in well patient with appendicitis. The trial, which included patients across two sites, found that delaying surgery was safe, and did not result in increased risks of complications such as readmission, emergency department visits, prolonged hospital stays or infections. The DELAY trial won top scientific paper at the recent Canadian Surgical Forum, and was identified as a "practice changing" paper at the Canadian Association of General Surgeons - Acute Care Review. The results of this study have been used to ensure that Dr. Walker, amongst others, can get a full nights sleep when on call.
Congratulations to all those involved on this amazing achievement!
