African surgeons gain month-long training in Kingston thanks to international partnership

Dr. Eugene Niyirera has travelled halfway around the world to observe surgeries at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and gain new knowledge to carry back to his home in Africa.

There, his hospital is also called KGH — the Koidu Government Hospital in Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa that has struggled with some of the world’s worst health outcomes, according to the organization Partners In Health, which has facilitated Niyirera’s travel to Kingston and learning from Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) doctors.

In a recent procedure, KHSC surgical teams successfully combined two separate robotic procedures (gallbladder surgery and colorectal surgery) in a single session—an approach that enhances patient care by reducing the need for multiple hospital visits, minimizing exposure to anesthesia, and shortening overall recovery time.

In the heart of Kingston General Hospital resides a four-armed robot that is making a positive impact on the lives of patients and surgeons at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).

The A.B. Smith QC Robotics program at KHSC launched in 2018 with the purchase of the da Vinci Xi, a four-armed surgical robot that creates a magnified, three-dimensional and high-definition image for surgeons while they operate using a set of handheld and foot controls that move the robot’s four arms, equipped with the required surgical instruments.

While Cathy Rows’ desire to have fun and stay active fuels her pickleball game, she says the rallying of her family, friends and Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) care teams powered her ability to bounce back from colon and lung cancer in just 16 short weeks.

Equipped with a robotic operating system called da Vinci, Cathy’s surgical teams were able to perform both her surgeries with robotic assistance, which meant her recovery times were quick. At best, she was home in a few days and on the pickleball courts 10 days later.
