Dr. Christine Li completed her undergraduate and medical school training at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She then went on to complete General Surgery residency at the University of Alberta and her Colorectal Surgery fellowship at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Dr. Li also holds a Master of Health Administration from UBC.
Her research interests include surgical innovation, medical education, and addressing areas of need in surgery with a systems-based approach. She has led province-level initiatives including an evaluation of the use of private surgical facilities in Alberta, this work impacted over $500 million in healthcare funding. Her other recent work has evaluated the inequities of surgical wait times for immigrants, the use of tap water for endoscopy to improve sustainability, and clinical research such as failure to rescue in colorectal surgery. Dr. Li also places a priority on mentorship within surgery and has been extremely lucky to work with many strong personal and professional mentors through her training. She has been a mentor and support to many students and residents, particularly young women, in or aspiring to be in surgery.
Dr. Li’s clinical practice encompasses the wide breadth of colorectal and general surgery ranging from benign perianal disease to inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer and also includes acute care surgery. She is excited to join the team at Queen’s University, KGH, and KHSC in providing high quality, team-based, patient-centered care and teaching to students and residents.
