The Undergraduate Surgical program is comprised of a Core surgical block, and a Peri-Op block.
The Core Surgical Clerkship rotation is typically 6 weeks long (although it can vary in length depending on the block - sometimes blocks can be 5 weeks or sometimes 7 weeks long). This is a mandatory rotation for all students and successful completion is a requirement for graduation and MCC licensure. The Core rotations include a combination of two of either General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, or Urology. The purpose of this experience is:
• For students to put into practice the knowledge and skills that they have acquired during the pre-clinical years that relates to surgical principles and to the various surgical disciplines
• For students to work as part of a team of health-care professionals caring for surgical patients
• To further acquire and practice technical skills
For further information on the Core Surgical block, please visit the MedTech Central website
The Peri-Op portion of the surgical clerkship is the same number of weeks in length as the Core Surgical block, with students usually doing three two week rotations - a combination selected from the following rotations: Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and one of the Surgical Subspecialty rotations comprised of ENT, Cardiovascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery.
The overall aim is to gain a better appreciation of acute illness presentations and the experience of the surgical patient from emergency assessment, pre-operative work-up, the operative experience (from the point of view of both the anesthesiologist and the surgeon) and post-operative care and follow-up.

The Department of Surgery at Queen's University provides elective experiences for students in the clerkship phase from other accredited medical schools (LCME/CACMS) in Canada and the United States. Students must be in their final year of clerkship.
Elective students in the Department of Surgery are put on-call on their designated service, and are welcome to attend the Surgical Seminar Series. A copy of this schedule can be obtained from Mara Kottis, Program Assistant. Call Schedules are emailed to elective students prior to their start date. This schedule enables the elective student to page his or her senior resident who will direct them as to the location and start time on their first day.
To apply for an elective in Surgery, interested applicants must contact the Electives Assistant, in the School of Medicine Undergraduate Office, 68 Barrie Street (ph. 613-533-6000 Ext. 79341). More detailed information is available on their website, including application instructions, the application form, and an immunization record form.
